    Other Side of Monlam River

    Synopsis

    A family is located in the beautiful mountains. This family has two children. Sertso, who’s nine years old. Sertan, who is six years old. Usually, the eighty-year-old lady Lhamo tells the children stories beside the temple by the river. One day, the lady tells the children a fable called “Monlam River”. This story left a deep impression on Sertso and Sertan. Their father, Tseten, is an unrestrained gambler. Yangchen, who cries all day long, can’t bear what her husband did, and return to her family. The two children hear a cruel remark their father made before their mother left: “the ancestors passed down the ivory bracelet, and if you don’t return it, then never step into this house again”. It deeply hurt the two children. Thus, the sister and brother decide to find the legendary Wishful Naga tree to take back their mother’s ivory bracelet.

    Director's statement

    If it is unforgettable, it must be the memories of childhood, which are accompanied by a gradual preference for focusing on the world of children. I want to record the joys and sorrows of their hearts. Who can heal our memories? Who can save the needs of the heart? Who is right in the world of childhood? And who is wrong? The first clue is the story of reality, and two kids search for another kind and beautiful world to rescue the natural family. The second clue is the fable told by the old lady. The third one is a perfect world brings them into trouble and doubt times. These three stories link and overlay together. The description method keeps with the childlike narrative, better conveys the outside world in sight of the children and strengthens the deeper meaning of the whole film.
