Synopsis
Daffy was sexually assaulted by her cousin when she was three. During a family reunion at her grandfather’s funeral, she decides to seek revenge by pointing her camera at those responsible. In the process, she discovers structural dilemmas in her family and begins to question the justice of her actions.
Daffy Liu
Daffy Liu graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and worked with Columbia Missourian for about two years as a photographer. Her graduation project, LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID, won the Award of Excellent in Multimedia: Online Storytelling at CPOY76. After returning to China, Daffy has directed, produced and coordinated more than 10 short documentaries with a total of more than 30 million web views. Among them, DIVING DOWN THE THREE GORGES, SEARCHING FOR THE UNDERWATER HOMETOWN was selected for the final evaluation of the 19th Beijing International Sports Film Week in 2023.
Director's statement
Although there are more and more films addressing sexual assault nowadays, most of the public still only imagines the pain of the victims. I hope this film can serve as a bridge between the public and the victims. When stories are told and needs are acknowledged, healing becomes possible. “Conflicts cannot be resolved on the same level at which they occur. We must rise above these conflicts to gain a broader perspective, akin to observing a storm from a higher vantage point.”
