In Liu Cixin’s novel *The Village Teacher*, a fleet officer of the Carbon-Based Federation describes the way humans on Earth communicate information: “They have a very thin organ in their bodies, which vibrates in this planet’s oxygen-nitrogen-dominated atmosphere to produce sound waves, simultaneously modulating the information to be transmitted into the sound waves. The receiving party also uses a thin membrane organ to receive information from the sound waves.” From this “extremely primitive and very rare” information transmission technology, humanity has developed almost all of its civilization’s achievements to date. However, in today’s era of rapid technological advancement, civilization has instead fallen into unprecedented multiple crises. The fissures that were once scattered everywhere have now become chasms between different individuals and groups, seemingly immeasurably deep and impossibly wide. At the individual level, the crisis is transforming into reality with astonishing efficiency. From poetry and distant dreams to food and vegetables, and wages and stocks, under pressure from multiple directions, many people either retreat into their own echo chambers or attempt to defend what is being swallowed by the chasm with aggressive stances, only to further reinforce the barriers on both sides of the chasm, making connection even more difficult.
